When and where will Cultivate New York take place?
CNY is planned for October 27th, from 5pm to 8pm at Le Pomme Club in Midtown.

Will it cost money to participate in the fair?
Companies will pay based on their status (non-profit, startup, corporation) and potentially current revenue.  Professionals will more than likely pay a small entry fee.

Who is behind Cultivate New York?
A team of volunteers from different fields (marketing, design, technology and entrepreneurship) who are passionate about seeing New York City become a leading hub for technology and entrepreneurship.

Is an unpaid job a legal practice?
First, some of the job opportunities that will be presented in Cultivate New York are for equity positions, meaning that the employee will receive equity in the company rather than paid with cash. Other jobs will be non-paid positions that have an “expiration” date  and serve to benefit the employee. Please see unfairinternships and  the U.S. Department of Labor website for more information.

Why would someone take an unpaid job?
There are several groups of people who are likely to seek unpaid job opportunities, including:

  1. Recent University graduates, who because of tough economic times are still looking for a job: A temporary position will be their opportunity to jump start their career and continue to build their resumes.
  2. Professionals who are looking for new employment: A temporary job will help them fill a gap in their resume.
  3. Career switchers: As you well know, finding a job in a non-profit or a start-up without prior experience is a difficult switch. A temporary job could show the person’s commitment to the process and help them do the switch more easily.

All temporary unpaid jobs have the potential to become a full- or part-time paid job, a networking opportunity and a resume booster. In addition, for unpaid positions at start-up companies, the work could be done for equity.
